A selection of stories and projects I edited

I’ve edited thousands of stories over the years. Here are a few that I am the most proud of.

Red, White, and Gray

Inside the United States of Gerontocracy, Where Old Leaders Rule and Young Americans Wait

2022

I oversaw the Politics team at Business Insider while they conceived of and executed this multi-story series revealing the costs of the United States being led by its oldest leaders ever. The project featured data analysis, graphics, video, and bespoke design.

Conflicted Congress

Personal finances of Congress members: Uncovering conflicts of interest

2021

I oversaw the editor and reporter who conceived of and analyzed the data underlying this project for Business Insider. I also edited several stories in the series. The project sparked a national conversation around the ethics of allowing members of Congress and their staff to trade stocks.

Jacob Blake profile

7 shots in the back: How 3 minutes with police ripped apart Jacob Blake’s life and rekindled his family’s push for justice

2021

I commissioned local freelance reporter Aisha I. Jefferson to profile Jacob Blake, who was paralyzed from the waist down after a police officer shot him in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Jefferson and I spent several months conceiving of and shaping the story, and I coached her through challenging reporting. I’m proud of the complex story we told.

Border wall feature

Like ‘building a 30-foot wall through Arlington Cemetery’: Tribal leaders in Arizona are worried Trump’s border wall will decimate sacred sites and leave smugglers no choice but to cut through native land

2020

Freelance writer J. Weston Phippen came to me with extensive reporting on how the US-Mexico border wall was ripping through Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, sacred land for the Tohono O’odham people. He wove a beautiful and fraught 4,000-word story, and we also commissioned a photographer to incorporate stunning visuals into the piece.
